Oh that's weird

That's not currently restricted as far as I can tell from my phone. I'll look into this

Ok i figured it out @Tree

Seems when you have multiple secondary tags, like your post which has two - System and Worldbuilding it doesn't display in all discussion

This might be a bug, as i cannot configure this. I can however configure a limit of how many secondary tags can be put on a post (including requiring at least one if I want)

I can submit this as a bug report, but being free software there's no real promise it will get fixed in a timely manner. What we can do, is maybe restrict posts to only have a single secondary tag, and maybe do a pass on what the secondary tag options are such that they make sense to not be needing to use multiple. Like - are the ones we have broad enough?

What do you think?

Actually I misspoke, the problem is you are using more than two primary tags

See screenshot

What we should do is rethink & limit the number of primary tags to a max of two, since it wasn't intended to allow multiple. We can demote one ore more of these tabletop subtags to secondary tags if you want to be able to tag multiple. That's the purpose of secondary tags - to stack as many on as make sense, whereas primary tags are kinda like traditional subforum categories.

though looking at the screenshot, the max is already 2, which makes me question how you were able to post that other threadโ€ฆ

Dang sorry Dielan I didn't know this issue would require so much debuging lol.

I think you're right about the multiple primary tags being the issue. The only thing that's weird is that Flarum places these primary tags nested under secondary tags, which I feel is counterintuitive.

To prevent this bug for future users, would it be possible to set the:

    • Required Number of Primary Tags range: 1 - 1?

As for my post, I'll probably just repost it using secondary tags instead.
Since we have two Tabletop categories (Tabletop / Tabletop RPG), could we reuse one of the icons from them to create a separate Writing secondary tag?

Tree let's lay this out before I change anything

      Are you suggesting:

      • Remove TTRPG secondary tag (to free the icon)
      • Demote the current Tabletop sub-primary tags to secondary tags
      • Limit primary tags back to 1

Or did you have something more specific in mind?

      • Tree replied to this.

        Dielan

Sounds good. Before we proceed, can you clarify if nesting is a function of only Primary Tags?
If it's available for Secondary Tags too, I think we can instead resolve everything by demoting as you said earlier:

        • converting all Topic Tags (Vidya, Tabletop, Off Topic, Politics and Cringe) to Secondary Tags
        • I think if multiple Primary Tags are introducing these issues, there's not much reason to keep any Topic tags as Primary Tags as their indexing is indistinguishable from Secondary Tags, and the restriction from the bugs defeats the purpose of multi-tagging.

Tree yeah secondary tags don't have any nesting

Here's a one liner from the admin page:

Tags are used to categorize discussions. Primary tags are like traditional forum categories: they can be arranged in a two-level hierarchy. Secondary tags do not have hierarchy or order, and are useful for micro-categorization.

Thinking of old forum structure, I think Off Topic makes sense as a top level category, but we could maybe merge Vidya and Tabletop into something like GAMING or something generic and introduce more secondary tags. Take a look at some examples of flarum forums to see where I'm coming from:

the official flarum forum - https://discuss.flarum.org/tags
a few samples from the flarum website showcase:
          https://www.devnl.nl/tags
          https://www.tendigitgrid.com/tags
          https://community.sunrise.ch/tags
          https://community.giffgaff.com/

We could also delete Politics and Cringe, and re-create it later if the forum really takes off. It's only purpose is to be a forum space that is not viewable to people not logged in. Similar to how our cringe channel on discord requires you to react for the role

A little bit of clarification: nested primary tags are actually considered as Secondary Tags:

          • they count toward the secondary tag cap and not toward the primary tag cap

This also means the hidden post bug is triggered by multiple nested tags, and not multiple primaries tags. A post by HelsEch earlier this year with both Vidya + Tabletop confirms this.

We're probably not gonna be able to get Dev Support on this so we'll just have to work around it.

I didnt get a reply CacoCry

So I'll implement the change next weekend to flatten this out a bit. I'll also merge vidya and tabletop into one top level tag and same with off topic and cringe. Adding new secondary tags to keep it tidy.

We can reintroduce top level tags as we get more post volume

            Dielan

Yeah I think there's just some bug with the nested tags. Thanks for creating the thread tho.

            7 days later

            Hold up @Tree

Was about to do all the things (including merge Cringe and Off Topic, which is done now) and noticed this:

Going to test again. The other two subtags under tabletop did NOT have that checkbox checked.

Ok i have confirmed @Tree there isn't a bug, it's just this one tag, of the three, had that 'Hide From All Discussions' checkbox checked which was acting like a poison pill when you do multitag

So, now we actually can use second level tags together where it makes sense, so i'd like to leave tabletop and it's subtags alone for now.

            16 days later

            @Dielan

Can we add another subtag to the Tabletop Primary Tag:

            • System
            • Worldbuilding -> World (namechange)
              • Think renaming this subtag would put it more in-line with the other subtags
            • Characters
            • Campaign (new subtag)
              • For Campaign Notes and ongoing Campaigns

              Tree great ideas. Implemented now

              Give it a try!
